3 Sep 2009 - September Newsletter

Welcome back everyone!  I hope that you all had a lovely summer holiday. We were all pleased to see the children return to school safe and well and obviously having enjoyed their summer holiday.

A special warm welcome to all the newcomers to Vicarage; we hope for a long and happy association and that your child will succeed to the very best of his/her ability here with us.

Events taking place this month:

Wednesday 9th 2:30pm:  Secondary transfer meeting in the sports hall for parents of year 6 pupils.  At this meeting we shall also be discussing SATS (the national tests for year 6 pupils), Saturday School and how you can best support your child in order for him/her to achieve their very best.

Thursday 10th 6:15pm:  Repeat secondary transfer meeting (details as above) in lower key-stage 2 hall (1910 building).

I hope that all year 6 parents will make every effort to attend one of the meetings as we shall be sharing very important information.

Key-stage 2 Parents

I hope you like the children’s home-school diaries that contain information regarding all aspects of school lie.  Please complete

the contact details at the front and use the diary to write any notes for your child’s class teacher as well as to record the reading your child has done at home; also please check the diary each day to see if there are any notes for your attention.

Home-reading

We expect every child to read each night for a minimum of 15 minutes.  Please make sure your child reads every day as reading is a skill that only gets better with practice.  Encourage your child to become a fluent reader by:

  • Hearing him/her read

  • Discussing what your child has read to ensure understanding

  • Reading to your child

Encouraging your child to read with expression and to take note of punctuation.

National Curriculum Results

At the end of key-stages 1 & 2 all pupils in years 2 and 6 are assessed by means of SATS (Standard Assessment Tests).  Year 2 pupils are assessed by their teacher in English and Maths and year 6 pupils are tested in English, Maths and Science.  It is expected that year 2 pupils of average ability will achieve level 2 and year 6 pupils of average ability will achieve level 4.

We were all very pleased with this summer’s SATS results which were:

Key-stage 1 - Level 2b+

Reading   72%

Writing   61%

Maths     70%

Key-stage 2 -Level 4+

Science 82%

Newsletters

Whole school newsletters are sent out on the first Thursday of each month; they will always be printed in this colour (green).

At the start of each term you will also receive a newsletter with information specific to your child’s year group – please make sure your child brings home the newsletters as it is important that you are kept informed of all that is going on in school.  Should you not receive them then let us know or simply call in to the main entrance to pick up copies.

Attendance

It is well know that regular attendance and punctuality make a real difference to a child’s progress at school.  Therefore please help your child succeed by making sure that he/she attends every day and arrives before 8:55am.  If your child is ill or has a medical appointment then please phone and let us know.

The attendance percentage for all the children from September 1st 2008 to July 21st 2009 was 93.7%.  The absence percentage was 6.3%.

Please note holidays during term time are not authorised.
