1 Oct 2009 - October Newsletter

Events taking place this month

October is Black History Month when we recall and celebrate the achievements and positive contributions made by black people to society.  In connection with this we have arranged various events including a performance of the play “The Empire Windrush” and a recital by a steel band.  We also have Black History displays throughout the school which I hope you will look at whilst in school for consultation week.

The week beginning Monday 19th October is Consultation Week when you will be able to come into school to discuss your child’s progress.  Please make every effort to attend as it is so important for home and school to work together to support your child’s learning.

Appointment letters will be sent home on Monday 5th October.

During your visit we would like you to complete a questionnaire about different aspects of the school; the results of which I shall publish in a future newsletter.

School Uniform

As it is getting cooler you may be interested in the following new items of school wear:

Red fleece waistcoats

Red and black reversible long-sleeved waterproof fleeces

These, and all other items of school wear, are available from the office and are on display in the main entrance

Reminder:

Children should be wearing black shoes or plain black trainers (no sandals or boots).

Also for health and safety reasons children may only wear a watch and/or a pair of small stud earrings in school (no hoop earrings).

Information service

On very rare occasions the school may need to be closed at very short notice like for instance when it snowed in February this year.  At such times it is very difficult for parents to contact the school by phone as the lines always seem to be engaged.  Due to this we have bought in to a service that parents can call to receive a message stating whether the school is open or re-opening on a given day.  The number for the parents to ring at such times is 020 8408 7508 followed by the school’s DCSF number of 3162093 or parents can access the same information at http://map.lgfl.org.uk/opencheck.  I do hope that we won’t have to close or remain closed for any reason in the future but should we have to then please use this service rather than the school’s direct numbers in order to access the latest information as quickly as possible.

Bangladesh visit

I have been very fortunate to have been invited to visit some schools in Bangladesh during the first week of November.  I shall be going with a group of Newham head teachers and with representatives from the British Council.  We shall be visiting schools in Dhaka and also in the region of Sylhet from where many of our families originate from.  In preparation for the visit I have joined the after school Bengali Club and am busy trying to learn Bengali with the children!

Due to the visit I will not be in school for 4 days after the October half-term.  Whilst I am away Mrs Crompton, our deputy head, will be acting Head so please do see her if you have any queries.
